What Do I Need?

Privacy policy

Effective date: July 10, 2026 · Applies to the website whatiseverythingineedto.com and the What Do I Need mobile apps.

The short version

What we collect and why

Your question. A set of common questions is answered instantly from a small built-in list stored on your device — for those, your question never leaves your device. When you ask “what do I need for…” something outside that built-in list, the text of your question is sent to our server, which passes it to an AI service (Anthropic’s Claude) to generate the checklist. Your question travels without any account or identity attached. Don’t include personal details in a question — the app never asks for any and doesn’t need any. In demo mode the AI is skipped and sample answers are returned, but the question still reaches our server.

Your checklists. Saved checklists and check-off state are stored only in your browser’s or app’s local storage on your device. They are never uploaded. Deleting them in the app (or clearing the site’s browsing data) removes them permanently — we hold no copy.

Technical data. Like nearly every web server, ours briefly processes your IP address to serve responses and to rate-limit abuse. IP addresses are masked in our logs. Recent questions are cached in server memory in hashed form (not readable text) — up to a few hundred recent results, evicted as new ones arrive — and the cache is not written to disk and fully clears whenever the server restarts. Our processing of this technical data rests on our legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) in delivering the answer you asked for and keeping the service abuse-free.

Voice input. The microphone button is optional and only listens while you use it. Speech is converted to text by your device or browser’s own speech-recognition service, which is governed by that provider’s privacy policy — some browsers and phones process audio on the device, while others (for example Chrome’s speech service) may send it to their own servers to transcribe. Audio is never sent to our servers.

Where your data is processed. Our server and AI provider process data in the United States. For visitors from the EU/UK this transfer relies on our providers’ standard contractual clauses / data-processing agreements (Anthropic and Render); contact us to request details. Anthropic processes your question as our processor and may retain it for a limited period (up to about 30 days) to operate the service and monitor for abuse, per its terms.

Third parties

Anthropic processes your question text to generate the checklist (Anthropic’s privacy policy). Render hosts our server and this website. Amazon receives nothing from us about you — if you tap a buy link, you leave our app and Amazon’s own terms and privacy policy apply there.

Affiliate disclosure: As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Buy links are affiliate links — if you buy, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What we don’t do

Children

The app is a general-audience shopping-checklist tool and is not directed at children. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children, beyond the transient technical data described above (an IP address masked in our logs, and a hashed short-lived query cache). This app is not intended for and is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 — if you believe a child has provided information, contact yourlakesidesolutions@yahoo.com and we will delete it.

Your choices & rights

Everything the app stores lives on your device — delete a checklist in the app, use “Clear all checklists”, or clear the site’s browsing data, and it’s gone. We retain no personal data server-side beyond the ephemeral, masked technical data described above, so there is nothing for us to look up, correct, or delete on request. EU/UK visitors have the rights the GDPR provides (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection) and may lodge a complaint with their supervisory authority (in the UK, the ICO). Don’t include personal or sensitive details in a question — the app never asks for any and doesn’t need any.

California (CCPA/CPRA): we do not sell or share (as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA) your personal information, and have not done so in the preceding 12 months. We also do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes requiring a Right to Limit.
